In 2005 a working group including representatives from DESMIE, PPC and RAE completed a study whose conclusions formed the basis for planning the Cyclades Interconnection project, which covers the interconnection of Syros, Mykonos, Paros and Naxos to HETS and the reinforcement of the Andros–Tinos link. This planning phase focused on minimising environmental impacts by siting new substations close to the coast and using submarine cable connections between the islands and the mainland system.
