The environmental permit for the entire Cyclades interconnection project, including the subsea 150 kV cable system linking Syros, Tinos, Mykonos and Paros with the Greek mainland grid, was granted by the competent authorities in September 2009. According to the EIB project documentation, this permit followed the completion of Environmental Impact Assessments for all GIS substations and was issued after consultation with relevant stakeholders and local communities. The permit, together with the associated EIA studies and specified mitigation measures, concluded that the project would not have significant adverse environmental effects nor negatively impact any European protected site, while enabling replacement of local island generation with cleaner mainland CCGT output and facilitating additional wind and solar development on the islands.
