In Phase A of the Cyclades Interconnection between Lavrio (mainland) and Syros, the island of Syros was first energised from the Hellenic Electricity Transmission System in March 2018. At this point, Syros was connected to the mainland grid via the Lavrion GIS substation, allowing the local oil-based power station on the island to be taken offline. This marked the start of power supply to Syros from the national interconnected system as part of the EU-funded project to connect the Cyclades islands to Greece’s mainland grid and replace autonomous, oil-fired generation with cleaner, more reliable transmission from the mainland.
