In its 2023 annual reporting on transmission network investments, the Croatian Energy Regulatory Agency (HERA) recorded that EUR 96.6 million was invested in the transmission network from all financing sources, with the largest step forward being the installation of submarine cables, including the laying of the cable between Crikvenica and the island of Krk. This confirms that substantial capital expenditure covering the Crikvenica–Krk submarine link was realised during 2023 as part of a wider national transmission reinforcement programme.
€96.6M
As part of Croatia’s Recovery and Resilience Plan programme to upgrade underground cables connecting islands to the mainland, the Crikvenica–Krk submarine cable section was completed during 2022 and is reported as being in operation. The Croatian Energy Regulatory Agency later noted that submarine cables were laid between Crikvenica and Krk within a broader investment drive to enhance the security of electricity supply to Adriatic islands, confirming the link’s transition into full operational service.
Implementation of the contract between Končar – Montažni inženjering and the Croatian Transmission System Operator (HOPS) for the supply and laying of new 110 kV submarine cables on the Crikvenica – Krk (Konjin) route began in early March 2021, initiating project execution including the onshore underground cable sections that connect the submarine cables to nearby transformer stations. This cable replacement project, which will run for 22 months, is described as a strategic investment to maintain secure electricity supply to Adriatic islands and support further development of local energy and tourism infrastructure.
In November 2020, Croatian transmission system operator HOPS signed a contract with KONČAR – Montažni inženjering (KMI) for the supply and laying of 110 kV submarine cables on the Crikvenica – Krk (Konjin) route, as part of a project that also covers the Dugi Rat – Brač (Postira) link. The agreement, valued at 91 million kuna for the first two sections and led by Končar engineering, aims to replace ageing oil‑paper insulated cables with new XLPE-insulated cables to improve the security of electricity supply to Adriatic islands.
Authority: Županijska skupština Primorsko-goranske županije · Licence: Concession for special use of maritime domain for laying the 110 kV Crikvenica–Krk submarine cable
The County Assembly of Primorje-Gorski Kotar (Županijska skupština Primorsko-goranske županije) granted a concession for the special use of maritime domain for laying the 110 kV Crikvenica–Krk submarine cable, covering a 4,012 m long, 1 m wide corridor from the car park at the mouth of the Dubračina in Crikvenica to Konjin Bay west of Šilo on the island of Krk. On the basis of this decision, a concession agreement (contract no. P003/07/2018) was subsequently signed on 20 July 2018 with Hrvatski operator prijenosnog sustava as the concessionaire.
Hrvatski operator prijenosnog sustava (HOPS) and KONČAR - Inženjering completed the first phase of the 110 kV subsea cable replacement project by finishing installation of the northern submarine cable section between the mainland and the island of Krk, covering the Crikvenica–Konjin route with new XLPE-insulated 3x 630 mm² cables that replace the existing link.
Installation of a new 110 kV submarine cable on the Crikvenica–Šilo (Krk) route began, with the vessel Ariadne carrying out the laying works as part of the first phase of HOPS’s strategic cable replacement project. The approximately six‑kilometre cable, which had been in place for about 50 years and was out of service due to an irreparable fault, is being replaced to restore a secure electricity supply to Krk and other Adriatic islands; this first phase, valued at 91 million kuna and including the Dugi Rat–Postira (Brač) section, is funded through Croatia’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan, within a wider 440 million kuna programme scheduled to run until June 2024.
