On 20 April 2021 IPTO/ADMIE completed the operational tests of the new state-of-the-art STATCOM (static synchronous compensator) system installed at the "Heraklion III" substation in Crete, in collaboration with HEDNO. Announced on 23 April 2021, the STATCOM is the first such installation in the Hellenic National Power Transmission System and enables dynamic voltage regulation and stable operation of Crete's power system, supporting the integration of the Crete–Peloponnese AC interconnection. The STATCOM was supplied, designed, installed and commissioned by NR Electric Co. Ltd., with a rating of 150 kV / 60 MVar. The installation forms an integral part of the Crete–Peloponnese electrical interconnection project (Phase I) and is co-financed by Greek national and EU community resources. As stated by IPTO President and CEO Manos Manousakis: "With the construction and operation of STATCOM in Heraklion, Crete, IPTO achieved yet another milestone towards the lift of the island's energy isolation". The STATCOM provides reactive power compensation and helps ensure the stable operation of the Crete system, allowing the eventual shutdown of obsolete local power plants once full interconnection of Crete to the continental system is in place.
