HOPS completed the replacement of the 110 kV submarine cable on the Krk–Lošinj line for the Cres (Osor 1) – Lošinj (Osor 2) section under the NPOO programme, and the new cable was put into operation in May 2024 after all necessary tests, measurements and technical inspections were carried out. A formal usage permit for this connection was subsequently obtained on 26 July 2024, confirming its full operational status within the Croatian transmission network.
By 2 April 2024, Asso.subsea, working for Končar on behalf of HOPS, had successfully completed transportation and installation of approximately 30 km of 110 kV submarine cables, including the Osor Bay connection between Cres and Lošinj. The project replaced the old cables with new three-core 630 mm² submarine cables across four cable systems linking Krk–Cres–Lošinj and Brač–Hvar–Korčula, marking completion of the cable installation phase for the Cres–Lošinj interconnector section.
As part of the completed 110 kV submarine cable replacement project that includes the Osor Bay link between Cres and Lošinj, Asso.subsea executed onshore pull-in and landfall operations at the island landing sites by 2 April 2024. The work involved challenging shore crossings with HDD pipes of around 120 m and 60 m and steep slopes at several locations, with the CLV Atalanti and onshore teams successfully carrying out consecutive landing activities to bring the new cables ashore.
In early February 2024, Končar - Inženjering and the Croatian transmission system operator HOPS began the second stage of their 110 kV submarine cable replacement programme, initiating works to replace existing subsea cables including the 1 km Osor Bay crossing that links Cres and Lošinj with a new three-core XLPE-insulated cable. This stage covers nearly 30 km of cables between several Adriatic islands, with the Cres–Lošinj Osor section explicitly identified as part of the scope.
Croatian transmission system operator HOPS began the Cres–Lošinj interconnection project at the end of February 2024, initiating works to connect the northern Adriatic islands Cres and Lošinj via new 110 kV submarine cables and associated onshore sections, replacing ageing oil‑insulated cables with higher‑capacity, more environmentally friendly technology and involving preparation of land sites and related civil works. These activities form part of a wider programme in 2024 to replace 110 kV submarine cables and corresponding land sections, with factory tests completed in 2023 and onshore site preparation and laying scheduled for Q1 2024.
Croatian transmission system operator HOPS secured capital support from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NPOO) for a strategic project to revitalise and modernise the transmission grid, including the replacement of 110 kV submarine cables linking the islands of Krk, Cres, Lošinj, Brač, Hvar and Korčula. The submarine cable component of this NPOO‑financed project, which covers the 7.5 km Krk–Cres link and the 1 km Osor Bay crossing between Cres and Lošinj, is valued at EUR 59.5 million and replaces ageing paper‑oil insulated cables with new three‑core XLPE cables to ensure long‑term security of supply and enable greater integration of renewables for the islands, including Cres–Lošinj.

Hellenic Cables, the cables segment of Cenergy Holdings, signed a second contract with contractor Končar Group to supply approximately 30 km of 110 kV high‑voltage submarine cables, accessories and related services for a HOPS project replacing outdated cable lines in the Adriatic Sea, including the links that secure the electricity supply to the islands of Hvar, Korčula, Cres and Lošinj. Under this contract, production of the new cables at Hellenic Cables’ Corinth plant in Greece was scheduled to start in 2023 and be completed by February 2024.
