On 17 March 2023, Italian TSO Terna, in its 2023 Development Plan, earmarked €300 million of investment for the Central Link project within the national Hypergrid programme. The plan describes Central Link as the reconstruction of 220 kV power lines between Umbria and Tuscany along the existing route, connecting the Villavalle (Terni) and Santa Barbara (Arezzo) substations, as part of an €11 billion Hypergrid backbone investment to strengthen internal zone exchanges and integrate renewables.
