Siemens Energy has been commissioned by transmission system operators EirGrid and RTE to deliver the two onshore HVDC converter stations for the Celtic Interconnector, one at Ballyadam in east Cork and one in La Martyre, Brittany. The scope covers engineering design, manufacture and supply of VSC HVDC equipment and large power transformers, along with full civil works, installation and commissioning of the converter stations that will transform power between 320 kV DC and 400 kV AC. These converter stations are key to enabling the 700 MW, 575 km Ireland–France interconnector to exchange electricity between the two national grids. Siemens Energy’s contract was awarded at the end of 2022 and construction activities on the Irish converter station are well advanced, with civil works and building erection in progress.
