On 14 October 2020, at the inauguration of the new Capri–mainland power connection, Terna announced that it had invested a total of €150 million in the project linking Capri with Sorrento and Torre Annunziata via two alternating current undersea cables and associated substation works, delivering environmental benefits and improved security of supply for the island.
€150M
At the end of September 2020, the second 150 kV AC undersea cable between Capri and Sorrento and the new Sorrento substation entered operation, closing the Capri–Torre Annunziata–Sorrento electricity ring in which the Capri–Torre Annunziata link forms the first section; this bidirectional 160 MW connection enabled Capri to be fully integrated into the national grid and supported the decommissioning of the island’s diesel power plant with substantial CO2 and cost savings.
The Capri–Torre Annunziata 150 kV HVAC submarine cable and associated Capri substation entered operation in 2017, becoming the first undersea power link to Capri and the initial section of Terna’s 160 MW Capri–mainland electricity ring. This 31 km connection between Capri and Torre Annunziata, developed under Terna’s Insula project, was completed and went into service that year, significantly improving the island’s security and reliability of supply ahead of the later Capri–Sorrento link.
On 24 September 2013, Terna Rete Italia S.p.A., part of Italian TSO Terna S.p.A., awarded Prysmian Group a contract worth about €70 million to supply and install the 150 kV HVAC submarine and land power cable system linking Capri with Torre Annunziata on the mainland. The turnkey scope covers approximately 30 km of submarine cable and 1 km of land cable, related network components and specialist civil works, with cable manufacture at Prysmian’s Arco Felice plant and marine laying by the vessel Giulio Verne, as part of Terna’s wider ‘Progetto Insula’ to connect Italian islands to the mainland.
Authority: Mimit · Licence: Authorisation decree for new 150 kV submarine cable "Capri - CP Torre Centrale (Annunziata)" and new 150 kV Capri substation
On 22 November 2012, Italian transmission operator Terna S.p.A. received an authorisation decree from Mimit for the project to strengthen the power supply to the Campanian islands via a new predominantly submarine 150 kV cable "Capri - CP Torre Centrale (Annunziata)" and a new 150 kV substation on Capri.
In 2012 Terna took the first step toward the Capri–Torre Annunziata submarine power link by launching plans for the initial undersea cable between Torre Annunziata and Capri, associated with construction of a new substation on Capri that would later go into operation in 2017 as part of the island’s definitive connection to the Italian mainland.
Terna opened the construction site and began work on the Capri–Torre Annunziata 150 kV AC power link, a 31 km line (30 km submarine and 1 km terrestrial) including a new low‑impact substation at Capri’s Gasto Ecological Island, marking the start of onshore civil works for the project under the Insula programme.
