As part of Terna’s Development Plan, the new 150 kV Sorrento substation was completed and all bays were energised and handed over in December, providing a modern node for the regional transmission grid that underpins the reorganisation of the Sorrentine Peninsula’s electricity network.
On 14 October 2020, Terna inaugurated the new 19 km Capri–Sorrento submarine power line in a ceremony attended by Italy’s Prime Minister and local dignitaries, marking the entry into service of the Capri–mainland connection, which completes a 160 MW electricity ring with the earlier Capri–Torre Annunziata section and enables Capri to be supplied from the national grid and retire its polluting oil-fired power station.
In December 2019, Terna carried out electrical cable placing operations in the port of Sorrento for the new undersea power line between Capri and Sorrento, including protecting the submarine cable in a trench or by covering it with piles of rocks for the harbour section.
Terna began onshore construction works for the Capri–Sorrento submarine power link in October 2018, initiating civil works and related activities on Capri and along the Sorrento side as part of the new high‑voltage connection between the island and the mainland.
Offshore construction for the Capri–Sorrento submarine cable commenced in October 2018, marking the start of at‑sea works for Terna’s new undersea power line linking Capri with the Sorrento peninsula.
Prysmian Group was selected by Terna Rete Italia and awarded a turnkey contract worth around €40 million to design, supply, install and commission the 150 kV HVAC Capri–Sorrento power link, comprising a 16 km submarine and 3 km land cable route between Sorrento and Capri’s Gasto Ecological Island, completing the island’s connection ring.
Prysmian Group reports that installation of the new 150 kV HVAC cable system forming the Capri–Sorrento submarine and onshore electricity link, awarded by Terna Rete Italia, is planned to begin in 2018, with installation activities scheduled across 2018–2019 and overall project completion expected in 2019. The turnkey project includes about 16 km of submarine route and 3 km on land between the Sorrento substation and the station at the Ecological Island of Gasto on Capri, with Prysmian responsible for laying the submarine cable using its cable-laying vessel Cable Enterprise and carrying out associated civil works.
Licence: Planning consent / authorisation for 150 kV interconnection CP Castellammare – CP Sorrento – Nuova SE Capri (EL-269) under the national transmission development plan.
Planning consent (authorisation under the Italian transmission development framework) was granted on 23 September 2011 for the 150 kV interconnection CP Castellammare – CP Sorrento – Nuova SE Capri (project code EL-269), part of the Campania 504-P "Riassetto rete AT penisola Sorrentina" scheme, which includes the Capri–Sorrento linkage.
Terna Rete Italia initiated a European call for tender for a new 150 kV HVAC submarine and land cable connection between Sorrento and Capri’s Gasto Ecological Island, opening the competitive procurement process that preceded contract award for the Capri–Sorrento interconnector.
As part of its €800 million development plan for the Campania electricity grid and the reorganisation of the Sorrentine Peninsula, Terna began planning the Capri–Sorrento link, partly in underground cable and partly in submarine cable, to provide a second power supply to Capri and enhance electrical security for Sorrento and neighbouring mainland municipalities.
