"NKT plays a key role in the project by designing, manufacturing and installing the 320 kV HVDC submarine and underground cable system covering a total transmission length of 160 kilometers." / "SHET’s contractor, ABB have appointed NKT Cables as the Contractor for the HVDC cable portion of the project (including subsea and land cable)."
ABB, main contractor to SHE Transmission for the Caithness–Moray HVDC link, appointed NKT as the contractor for the HVDC cable portion of the project, covering both subsea and land sections. NKT delivered a turnkey 320 kV HVDC cable system solution, designing, manufacturing and installing the submarine and underground cable circuits along the full 160 km transmission route between Noss Head/Spittal and Portgordon/Blackhillock. With a symmetric monopole configuration using two parallel cables, this equates to approximately 226 km of subsea cable in the Moray Firth and 94 km of underground land cable. NKT’s scope included offshore laying, trenching, mechanical backfill, controlled flow excavation, rock placement and subsequent repair and replacement works to achieve required burial depth prior to final energisation of the link in 2018/2019.
