"ABB will design, engineer, supply and commission two 320 kilovolt land-based HVDC Light converter stations... ABB's scope of supply also includes submarine and underground cables covering a total transmission length of nearly 160 kilometers."
ABB was awarded a contract worth over $800 million by Scottish Hydro Electric (SHE) Transmission plc to deliver the Caithness–Moray HVDC power transmission link. Under this turnkey HVDC Light contract ABB designed, engineered, supplied and commissioned two 320 kV land-based converter stations at Spittal in Caithness and Blackhillock in Moray, and provided the associated submarine and underground HVDC cable system covering a total transmission route of about 160 km. The ±320 kV link, rated up to 1,200 MW, reinforces the onshore transmission network in northern Scotland and enables the export of large volumes of renewable generation from Caithness and surrounding areas into the wider GB grid. ABB’s scope combined converter technology with responsibility for the HVDC cable system within an integrated EPC package.
