Single 220 kV AC export cable system for Burbo Bank Extension: approximately 24.3 km subsea from the offshore substation to landfall near Rhyl plus 10.4 km onshore in ducts to the Burbo Bank onshore substation at St Asaph.
ABB AB High Voltage Cables was contracted by DONG Energy to deliver the high-voltage export cable system for the Burbo Bank Extension offshore wind project, whose transmission assets were later transferred into the Burbo Bank Extension OFTO. ABB’s scope covered design, engineering, manufacturing, supply and commissioning of a 220 kV AC three‑core subsea export cable running approximately 24.3 km from the offshore substation to landfall near Rhyl, as well as the associated offshore substation export connection. ABB also supplied the 220 kV onshore export cable system, consisting of single‑core XLPE cables in ducts over a route of about 10.4 km from the landfall transition joint bay to the new onshore substation at St Asaph, together with fibre optic cables, joints, accessories and terminations. The order was valued at around USD 30 million and formed the main export circuit that now underpins the OFTO transmission link.
