The development zone for Buchan Offshore Wind was identified when the Scottish Government’s Sectoral Marine Plan for offshore wind, including Plan Option NE8, was adopted in October 2020 after extensive consultation, designating the 330 km² area northeast of Fraserburgh as suitable for up to 1 GW of floating wind generation.
