Landfall, nearshore and onshore interfaces for the BritNed ±450 kV HVDC submarine cable system at Maasvlakte, NL.
Visser & Smit Hanab, through its marine contracting business, was subcontracted by ABB to perform the landfall, nearshore and onshore cabling works for BritNed at Maasvlakte in the Netherlands. Its construction-phase scope included engineering the landfall, horizontal directional drilling of two PE dune and beach crossings, extending PE pipes 300 m offshore, managing a separation pontoon, pulling in the two HVDC cables from the cable‑lay vessel to the joint bay, accurately placing and spacing the cables on the seabed in shallow water, and burying the cables from the shoreline out to around 3 km offshore, as well as grouting the HDD ducts and associated onshore cable duct works.
