BritNed 1,000 MW ±450 kV HVDC bipole interconnector using two bundled mass‑impregnated submarine cables over an offshore route of about 250 km in the North Sea plus short onshore sections.
Global Marine Systems acted as the marine installation contractor for the BritNed HVDC interconnector, laying the submarine power cables between the Isle of Grain in Kent and Maasvlakte near Rotterdam. Working with ABB as cable manufacturer, Global Marine Systems installed the two bundled 450 kV mass‑impregnated HVDC cables along the approximately 250 km offshore route across the North Sea, completing the submarine power connection in 2010. Its scope covered offshore cable lay operations for roughly 500 km of submarine cable for the 1,000 MW BritNed link, integrating with onshore converter station works delivered by the BAM Nuttall / Siemens consortium.
