BritNed 1,000 MW ±450 kV HVDC bipole interconnector between Isle of Grain (GB) and Maasvlakte (NL), total route length ~260 km (about 250 km offshore, 9 km onshore), using two bundled mass‑impregnated submarine cables and associated underground land cables.
ABB was awarded a record $350 million contract in May 2007 to supply the complete set of HVDC cables for the 1,000 MW BritNed interconnector between the Isle of Grain in Great Britain and Maasvlakte in the Netherlands. Under this contract ABB designed, manufactured, tested and delivered the 450 kV mass‑impregnated copper conductor submarine cables and associated underground land cables that link the converter stations. ABB supplied approximately 500 km of twin bundled submarine cable for the 250 km offshore route and around 18 km of underground onshore cable sections in the UK and the Netherlands, enabling commissioning of the 260 km GB–NL link in 2010/2011.
