The Bretagne Sud Platform (AO5) is an RTE‑owned offshore alternating‑current grid connection (offshore electrical platform / poste électrique en mer) being delivered to collect and export production from the Bretagne Sud floating wind cluster (AO5 Pennavel) and to accommodate a planned AO9 Bretag...
RTE plans to launch the main tender on 15 March 2024 for the contract covering three 750 MW HVAC offshore substations located 40–50 kilometres offshore, which will connect the Southern Brittany AO5 floating wind project and two Mediterranean floating wind farms to the onshore grid. This tender follows the pre‑qualification phase and is aimed at pre‑selected suppliers competing to deliver the offshore substations, including the Bretagne Sud AO5 platform.
According to RTE’s 2025 Network Investment Outlook, a contract for HVAC cables has been awarded to Hellenic Cables (Cenergy Holdings), covering approximately 1,700 km of HVAC cables for the AO5 (Bretagne Sud) and AO6 floating wind tenders and their extensions. This multi‑project award designates Hellenic Cables as the export cable supplier for the Bretagne Sud AO5 grid connection.
Réseau de Transport d’Électricité (RTE) launched a pre‑qualification process for a tender to deliver three 750 MW HVAC offshore substations, to be installed 40–50 kilometres offshore to connect floating wind farms off Southern Brittany (AO5) and in the French Mediterranean to the onshore grid. The pre‑qualification, which covers the Bretagne Sud AO5 offshore substation among others, opened on 28 December 2023 and runs until 26 January 2024.

By 13 June 2022, the high‑resolution (UHR) seismic and multibeam echosounder geophysical survey for the BRE_AO5 offshore substation area had been completed, with Tecnoambiente and Geoquip Marine delivering the "UHR Seismic Survey Results Report" for the French Ministry for the Ecological Transition. The report presents processed MBES bathymetric grids, seismic profiles, interpreted geology, and geohazard assessment for the planned Bretagne Sud (AO5) offshore substation site, confirming completion of geophysical data acquisition and interpretation to inform design of the grid connection platform and associated export cables.
In 2021, Gaia–Blue Earth prepared a geological bibliographic study of Southern Brittany for the BRE_AO5 area in the Bay of Biscay to support the French tender call for offshore wind power. This desktop study compiled existing geological information for the AO5 zone, including the planned offshore substation area, providing an initial understanding of subsurface conditions ahead of detailed site surveys for the Bretagne Sud Platform (AO5) grid connection.
