On 11 April 2014, the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (Norges vassdrags- og energidirektorat, NVE) granted Statnett a concession for new 420 kV subsea cable connections across the inner Oslofjord, including the Solberg–Brenntangen link, with associated new landfall and jointing (muffe) stations. The approval replaces existing ageing cables that will be removed once the new facilities are in operation, and is intended to improve security of electricity supply in Eastern Norway and safeguard trading capacity between Norway and Sweden.
