High-voltage DC XLPE power cable system (approx. 120 km submarine and 110 km underground) connecting BorWin epsilon offshore converter platform to Garrel/Ost onshore converter station for the 900 MW BorWin5 project.
NKT was awarded a turnkey contract by TenneT to supply and install the high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cable system for the BorWin5 offshore grid connection in the German North Sea. The scope covers production, delivery and laying of both the approximately 120 km offshore submarine cables and 110 km onshore underground cables forming the ±320 kV, 900 MW connection between the BorWin epsilon offshore converter platform and the Garrel/Ost onshore converter station. As a bipole/symmetric monopole system with two parallel HVDC cables along the route, this equates to roughly 240 km of subsea cable and 220 km of land cable manufactured and installed by NKT, including accessories and offshore installation using the cable-laying vessel NKT Victoria. The project supports export of offshore wind power from EnBW’s He Dreiht area into the German transmission grid, with commissioning scheduled for 2025.
