Following preparatory work by consultants to identify possible placements for Denmark’s planned energy islands and associated offshore wind farms, the final locations were fixed in a political decision in November 2020. This decision confirmed the specific siting of the offshore wind parks by Bornholm that underpin the Bornholm Energy Island concept, as well as the artificial island and offshore wind parks in the North Sea. The selection drew on fine screening studies of environmental, seabed, wind resource and planning conditions in the Baltic Sea and North Sea, allowing Danish policymakers to determine the optimum areas for development. With this agreement on location, the Bornholm Energy Island project moved from broad area assessment to a defined site south‑southwest of Bornholm reserved for government-led offshore wind development and subsequent detailed investigations.
