On 21 January 2026, a fault in the undersea cable connecting the Danish island of Bornholm to Sweden caused the island’s power supply to cease at 10:16 am, leaving Bornholm without electricity according to local supplier Trefor El-Net Ost and Danish broadcaster DR.
Following the 21 January 2026 outage on the undersea cable between Bornholm and Sweden, emergency services activated a backup power plant in Rønne to gradually restore electricity to the island, with full power recovery expected to take several hours.
The HASLE 60/10 kV substation on Bornholm, which forms part of the island’s 60 kV network and is connected to Sweden via the BORRBY–HASLE link, is listed as dating from 1980 in the Bornholm power system overview, indicating its commissioning as one of the system’s 60/10 kV substations.
The Bornholm Cable, a 60 kV AC submarine power cable connecting Hasle on the Danish island of Bornholm with Borrby in Tomelilla, Sweden, entered full commercial operation in 1980 under the ownership of Energinet (previously Østkraft).

A cable concession was granted for the electricity interconnection between Bornholm’s grid and Sydkraft’s regional network in Skåne before the current provision in the Swedish Electricity Act on significant cross‑border interconnectors was introduced.
