The offshore substation for the Borkum Riffgrund 1 offshore wind farm in the German North Sea, weighing approximately 3,500t, was installed at the project site in August 2013. The substation platform consists of a topside mounted on an eight‑legged steel jacket supported by piles. For the offshore installation campaign, the substation jacket and topside were transported to the wind farm location by the heavy-lift barge Boa Barge 36. The jacket foundation and substation topside installation contract had been awarded to Scaldis Salvage Marine Contractors, which subcontracted Volker Staal en Funderingen for the jacket installation, while Bladt Industries constructed the offshore substation and its jacket structure.
