Blyth Offshore Demonstrator is a demonstration-scale offshore wind farm located off the coast of Blyth, Northumberland, United Kingdom, with an operational capacity of about 41.5 MW. Developed and operated by EDF Renewables through a project-specific vehicle, the site was built as a technology demonstrator to trial next‑generation offshore wind approaches and to underpin further floating-wind development in the area. Commissioned in the late 2010s, the demonstrator remains a small but strategically important asset for EDF’s UK portfolio and for early commercialisation of novel offshore concepts.
The project has also been used as a platform for commercial partnerships: in October 2021 EDF Renewables announced a sale of a 49% interest in the holding company to Tenaga Nasional Berhad via its Vantage RE subsidiary while retaining a 51% stake and responsibility for asset management and follow‑on development. EDF has positioned Blyth as both an operational asset and a staging point for a proposed follow‑on floating project (development rights for up to ~58.4 MW were noted in developer communications). Community benefit arrangements were reported to remain in place following the joint‑venture transaction. Overall, Blyth’s value is primarily as a demonstrator and developer learning site rather than a large-scale commercial park: it has informed later floating-wind plans and EDF’s wider renewable growth strategy without being an OFTO‑style divestment case.
