20 kV HVAC hybrid power and 48-fibre submarine cable, 15 km jointless length from Quiberon to Belle-Île-en-Mer.
General Cable designed and manufactured the new hybrid submarine power and fibre-optic cable linking Quiberon on the French mainland to Belle-Île-en-Mer for ERDF. The 20 kV HVAC distribution cable, integrating a 48-strand fibre optic unit, was produced as a single 15 km jointless length to improve reliability and extend service life. Design and manufacturing were executed within General Cable Europe, using the high- and extra-high-voltage insulation and sheathing lines at the Silec Cable plant in Montereau to produce the conductors and core, which were then transported to General Cable’s Nordenham facility in Germany for assembly of the unipolar cable and application of double metal armouring. The cable provides Belle-Île-en-Mer with its main electricity supply and high-speed broadband connection to the mainland.
