Offshore construction for the Beatrice Offshore Wind Farm began in April 2017, marking the transition from onshore-focused works to full-scale offshore installation at the project site approximately 13km off the Caithness coast in Scotland. This milestone followed onshore construction, which had started in Moray in May 2016, and was a key step in the three-year construction programme that ultimately led to the 84‑turbine, 588MW wind farm becoming fully operational in June 2019. The project represents one of Scotland’s largest offshore wind developments and one of the largest private infrastructure investments in the country, with capital expenditure of around £2.5bn. A contemporaneous project update in mid‑May 2017 records that offshore construction had begun at the beginning of April, with the heavy lift vessel Stanislav Yudin, operated by Seaway Heavy Lifting, already having safely installed more than 10% of the foundation piles. The update describes how the Stanislav Yudin, supported by anchor handling tugs Bremen Fighter and Smit Sentosa, uses an eight‑point anchor system and a 700‑tonne Pile Installation Frame with hydraulic feet to install clusters of four piles on the seabed. Marine coordination was managed from a dedicated Marine Coordination Centre in Wick, operating 24/7, with guard vessels contracted via the Scottish Fishermen’s Federation, including suitable local fishing vessels where possible. This early offshore activity laid the physical foundations for subsequent turbine installation, which achieved first turbine installation and first power export in July 2018 and completion of all turbine installations by 14 May 2019, ahead of full operations from June 2019.
