Bay of Biscay (Biscay Gulf) HVDC interconnection: two 1,000 MW links, four 400 kV symmetric monopole cables over an approximately 400 km route (about 300 km submarine and the remainder underground).
Prysmian Group was awarded an EPCI contract by INELFE for Cable Link 2 of the Biscay Gulf (Bay of Biscay) HVDC interconnection between Spain and France. The contract covers design, manufacture, installation, testing and commissioning of two 400 kV HVDC single-core cables with XLPE insulation and associated fibre‑optic cables along the full route between the Gatika and Cubnezais substations, including both submarine and land sections. Prysmian is also responsible for constructing the four landfall sites for both links in France and Spain. Cable Link 2 provides 1 GW of capacity and represents roughly half of the interconnector’s almost 1,600 km of HVDC submarine and land cables, implying around 800 km of cable supplied by Prysmian. Marine installation will be executed using Prysmian’s new cable‑laying vessel, with commissioning of the overall project targeted for 2028.
