Bay of Biscay (Biscay Gulf) HVDC interconnection: two 1,000 MW links, four 400 kV symmetric monopole cables over an approximately 400 km route (about 300 km submarine and the remainder underground).
NKT was selected by INELFE to deliver one of the two 400 kV HVDC power cable systems for the Biscay Gulf (Bay of Biscay) interconnection between Spain and France. Together with Prysmian, NKT holds an EPC contract package covering almost 1,600 km of HVDC submarine and land cables for the two 1 GW links that form the interconnector. NKT’s scope for its link includes the design, manufacture, supply and installation of the HVDC cable system, covering both the submarine section across the Bay of Biscay and the underground land sections to the Gatika and Cubnezais converter stations. This equates to roughly half of the total HVDC cable length for the project, or about 800 km of cable supplied by NKT.
