Hitachi Energy, as leader of a consortium with VINCI, was awarded the EPC contract for the two onshore HVDC converter stations of the Bay of Biscay (Biscay Gulf) interconnection between Spain and France. Under this contract, Hitachi Energy is responsible for the HVDC process, including the design and supply of the 400 kV HVDC Light technology, converter valves, transformers and associated power electronics, as well as engineering support and participation in construction and commissioning. The two ground converter stations, located at Gatika in Spain and Cubnezais in France, will convert AC from the national grids to DC for transmission and back to AC, enabling 2 GW of cross‑border capacity via the 400 km interconnector. The project is scheduled for commissioning around 2028 and will significantly enhance security of supply and renewable integration across the Iberian and French power systems.
