In June 2025, Red Eléctrica, the Spanish transmission system operator, commenced onshore preparatory works for the Bay of Biscay interconnection near the coast at Lemoiz in Biscay. The company reports that directional drilling is underway for the subsea cable landfall, marking the start of shore-crossing enabling works on the Spanish side of the project. This drilling activity forms part of the land-based section of the interconnection, which will route cables from the new Gatika converter station to the sea. The works are being executed using directional drilling techniques to create the necessary underground conduit for the future subsea cable installation.
