Red Eléctrica, the Spanish TSO and Redeia subsidiary, has begun construction in Biscay on the land-based section of the Bay of Biscay electrical interconnection with France. As of 10 June 2025, the company has started the onshore cable installation campaign, which involves excavating two trenches approximately 1.5 metres deep along a 13 km underground route from the new Gatika converter station to the sea connection point. The route traverses the municipalities of Gatika, Maruri-Jatabe and Lemoiz, has been designed to avoid urban areas, and largely uses existing forestry tracks and paths. Once these land-based works are completed, the environment is to be fully restored, leaving only small inspection chambers visible every 500 metres. This activity marks the start of the main onshore export cable trenching and installation for the Bay of Biscay interconnector on the Spanish side.
