Warwick Energy Limited submitted a Section 36 application to the Department of Trade and Industry (Offshore Renewables Consent Unit) for a 30-turbine, 108 MW offshore wind farm approximately 7 km south-west of Walney Island, Barrow-in-Furness. The supporting Environmental Statement was prepared by RSK Environment and dated May 2002, as recorded in the Cumbria County Council Development Control and Regulation Committee paper of 28 August 2002 (Background Papers): "Barrow Offshore Wind Farm Environmental Impact Statement and Non-Technical Summary, RSK Environment, May 2002". The committee paper confirms that, at the time of its August 2002 meeting, the County Council had been formally consulted by the DTI on the proposal. The application was processed under Section 36 of the Electricity Act 1989, with parallel consents required under the Food and Environmental Protection Act 1985 (FEPA licence) and the Coast Protection Act 1949 via ORCU's streamlined offshore consents process. Planning consent was granted in March 2003, with construction completed in 2006.
