525 kV HVDC export cable system between the BalWin delta offshore converter platform and the Unterweser onshore grid connection point, total route length about 275 km (165 km subsea, 110 km onshore), comprising two HVDC power cables plus a metallic return conductor.
LS Cable & System, as part of a consortium with Jan De Nul Group and Denys, was contracted by TenneT in December 2023 to supply the 525 kV HVDC cable system for the BalWin4 offshore grid connection. Under the contract LS Cable & System is responsible for the design, manufacture, termination and testing of all subsea and onshore HVDC power and metallic return cables linking the BalWin delta offshore converter platform to the onshore grid connection at Unterweser. For BalWin4, the company will produce approximately 495 km of submarine cable and 330 km of land cable (three HVDC/return cables over a 165 km offshore and 110 km onshore route), as part of TenneT’s 2 GW programme. Cable production takes place at LS Cable’s facility in Donghae, South Korea, with manufacturing scheduled to be completed by 2028 ahead of installation and planned commissioning of BalWin4 in 2029.
