BalWin1 export cable system from BalWin alpha offshore converter platform to Wehrendorf converter station, comprising ±525 kV HVDC bipole (2 parallel cables) over ~155 km subsea and ~205 km onshore route within Amprion’s 2 GW programme.
Prysmian Group signed a package of contracts with German transmission system operator Amprion in February 2024 to provide ±525 kV HVDC cable systems for the BalWin1 and BalWin2 offshore grid connections and the DC34 onshore project. For BalWin1, Prysmian will manufacture and supply the HVDC export cable system linking the BalWin alpha offshore converter platform in the German North Sea to the Wehrendorf onshore converter station in Lower Saxony. The system comprises two single-core ±525 kV copper HVDC cables with XLPE insulation for the approximately 155 km subsea section and P-Laser insulated underground cables for the roughly 205 km land section, plus a dedicated metallic return and fibre optic cable. Overall, BalWin1 will use about 1,070 km of cable along a route of around 360 km, forming part of Amprion’s 2 GW offshore grid connection programme scheduled to enter operation around 2030.
