In early April 2025, Lithuanian Energy Minister Žygimantas Vaičiūnas, Latvian Climate and Energy Minister Kaspars Melnis, and Volker Oschmann, Director-General for Electricity at the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, publicly presented the planned concept for a new offshore electricity interconnection between the Baltic States and Germany. During this event, the transmission system operators Litgrid (Lithuania), Augstsprieguma tīkls (Latvia), and 50Hertz (north-east Germany) outlined the Baltic Hub project as a roughly 600 km long, 2 GW hybrid offshore connection. The presented concept included a planned connection point on the Lithuania–Latvia border, with the precise location to be defined following technical studies, and confirmed the role of Baltic Hub in linking Baltic and German power systems and integrating offshore wind.
