By 2011, NKT had completed its 2009–2011 turnkey contract for Baltic 1, delivering the full 150 kV HVAC export cable system rated at 48.3 MW together with the 30 kV MVAC infield cable system, providing a reliable infield and export cable connection for Germany’s first commercial offshore wind farm.
Baltic 1 grid connection system commissioned and operational.
NKT was contracted by Vattenfall Europe Baltic Offshore Grid GmbH and EnBW Erneuerbare Energien GmbH to deliver a turnkey cable system for the Baltic 1 project in the German Baltic Sea, supplying approximately 60 km of 150 kV HVAC export cables and 20 km of 30 kV infield MVAC cables for cost‑efficient transmission of power from Germany’s first commercial offshore wind farm during a project execution period from 2009 to 2011.
For the Baltic 1 offshore grid connection, the offshore transformer platform that steps up the wind farm’s output from 33 kV to 150 kV was engineered and supplied by several contractors: Balslev designed and simulation-tested the platform, ABB provided the power distribution equipment, and Waserwind supplied the substation platform structure itself, while 50Hertz and NKT Cables handled the subsea cable supply and grid connection to shore.
