In June 2003, Airtricity, which had secured the foreshore lease for the Arklow Bank site, signed a contract with GE Wind Energy for the 25 MW Arklow Bank Offshore Wind Park Phase 1, including its export connection to shore. Under this agreement GE Wind Energy would supply the turbines and build, own and operate the demonstrator project, with submarine cables bringing power to land and underground cables linking onward to ESB Networks at the Arklow National Grid Substation, while Airtricity retained an option to purchase the project after a two‑year certification and demonstration period following first operation.
