By 2004, the Arklow Bank Phase 1 offshore wind park and its associated export system—submarine cables from the Arklow Bank site to shore and underground onshore cables connecting into ESB Networks at the Arklow National Grid Substation—had been installed and entered operation as Ireland’s first offshore wind project. The 25 MW demonstrator, comprising seven GE 3.6 MW turbines developed by Airtricity (now SSE) and GE Energy and owned and operated by GE Energy, has since remained the country’s only operational offshore wind farm, with the ABWP1 export cable shown in later project documentation as the existing grid connection asset.
