APOLLO-LINK is recorded as "under consideration" in Italy’s 2025 National Network Development Plan prepared by Terna and overseen by the regulator ARERA, meaning the proposed 2,000 MW HVDC interconnector between La Spezia and Spain is formally included in Italy’s national transmission planning framework.
A peer-reviewed techno‑economic and regulatory analysis of the privately financed APOLLO-LINK HVDC interconnector was published in B&H Electrical Engineering, presenting detailed cost estimates (around €3.5 billion total with €3.1 billion CAPEX), projected annual social welfare gains of up to €860 million, and the proposed APOLLO‑MODEL congestion‑revenue‑based regulatory framework with a potential cap‑and‑floor regime for financing the project.
Developers and researchers presented a quantitative cost–benefit analysis of the APOLLO-LINK Italy–Spain HVDC interconnector at the IEWT 2025 conference, outlining a 2 GW, 525 kV undersea link with onshore cable sections and converter stations and detailing project costs, socio-economic welfare benefits, and arbitrage-driven value over a 25‑year operational period from 2032 to 2057.

APOLLO-LINK is a planned high-voltage direct current (HVDC) interconnection project designed to link the electricity systems of Italy and Spain. The developer presents the project as a cross-border HVDC VSC (voltage source converter) bipolar interconnector intended to strengthen security of suppl...
APOLLO-LINK – The Mediterranean Solar Bridge, The Mediterranean Solar Bridge, TYNDP 2024 project 1210
APOLLO-LINK, a privately financed 2,000 MW ±525 kV HVDC interconnector between Spain and Italy North, is included in ENTSO-E’s Ten-Year Network Development Plan 2024 project collection with official status "under consideration", allowing it to be assessed in ENTSO-E’s cost–benefit analysis and ranked among European transmission projects.
Energynautics, on behalf of OMNIA, successfully concluded a connection point assessment for the APOLLO-LINK subsea HVDC interconnector between Spain and Italy, using a European transmission system model in PyPSA to evaluate technically viable onshore connection points, estimate usable NTC in both directions, and identify potential post-connection grid bottlenecks in order to meet ENTSO-E TYNDP 2024 guideline requirements.
