132 kV HVAC double‑circuit three‑core submarine power cable system between the Spanish mainland and Ceuta, including approximately 58 km subsea route and 11 km of underground land cables, supplied and installed on a turnkey basis by Prysmian.
Prysmian Group was awarded by Red Eléctrica a turnkey contract covering the submarine and land cable systems for the Spanish mainland–Ceuta HVAC interconnection across the Strait of Gibraltar. For this project, Prysmian is responsible for the design, manufacture, supply, installation and commissioning of a 132 kV HVAC double‑circuit, three‑core XLPE‑insulated submarine power cable system, together with the associated underground land cables on both the Andalusian and Ceuta sides. The subsea section follows a roughly 58 km route reaching depths of up to 900 m, while the total land route is about 11 km, all installed underground. Submarine cables are manufactured at Prysmian’s Norderham (Germany) and Pikkala (Finland) plants, with land cables produced at Vilanova (Spain). Offshore installation and burial, including the challenging deep‑water sections, are carried out using Prysmian’s cable‑laying vessel Giulio Verne, with commissioning scheduled around 2025.
