Amrumbank West

Amrumbank West is an operational North Sea offshore wind farm off Germany’s coast that occupies a compact site north of Heligoland and was developed to deliver utility-scale renewable energy into Germany’s grid via the HelWin2 transmission cluster. The project was progressed under E.ON’s development umbrella and now sits in the RWE portfolio as a standalone SPV; its construction used conventional monopile foundations and an on-site transformer/collection arrangement feeding an HVDC export link via the HelWin beta converter platform. What distinguishes Amrumbank West in market terms is its role as an early North Sea cluster element and its operational evolution: it tied into the HelWin2 HVDC hub to deliver efficient long-distance export and later became the first RWE offshore park to be pre-qualified to provide automatic frequency restoration (secondary reserve) to the German system, marking an operational shift toward grid services in addition to energy production. The project encountered routine offshore construction challenges typical of the North Sea (piling, seabed protection and some localized foundation remediation) that were managed during the build phase. Strategically, Amrumbank West demonstrates the value of clustered grid access (HelWin2) and early lessons in integrating large-scale offshore plants into system-stability markets — a capability RWE has since applied to other assets.
