During the winter of 2007–08, onshore construction for the Alpha Ventus grid connection began on the island of Norderney, where cable pipes for multiple three-phase and direct-current connections from offshore wind farms, including Alpha Ventus, were installed beneath existing roads and paths in a sand‑cement bedding to allow natural cooling and minimise surface disturbance.
