In 1973, Kraftnät Åland commissioned and put into use the first "Sverigekabeln" subsea electricity connection between Åland and Sweden, establishing a dedicated transmission link for importing power to the Åland grid. This initial Sweden cable marked the start of cross-border transmission via this route and later served as the predecessor to the replacement cable installed in 2000.
