Xlinks First Ltd is a privately owned UK company established in 2019 to develop long‑distance renewable power projects that connect regions with abundant solar and wind resources to major demand centres. It is the sole shareholder of Xlinks 1 Ltd, which is responsible for promoting, developing and operating the Xlinks Morocco–UK Power Project. Xlinks First sits within the wider Xlinks group, which is building a portfolio that includes the Morocco–UK Power Project and the Sila Atlantik concept between Morocco and Germany.
The Morocco–UK Power Project is Xlinks First’s flagship development. It comprises around 11.5GW of zero‑carbon generation from solar and wind in Morocco’s Tan‑Tan / Guelmim‑Oued Noun region, combined with a 22.5GWh/5GW battery facility. This system is designed to deliver 3.6GW of firm, flexible power for an average of more than 19 hours a day, equivalent to supplying about 8% of Great Britain’s current electricity needs or over 7 million homes. Power would be transmitted exclusively to Great Britain via four HVDC subsea cables of about 3,800–4,000km, making landfall in Devon and connecting through two 1.8GW links agreed with National Grid near Alverdiscott. The project is intended to displace imported gas, lower wholesale prices and materially reduce UK power‑sector CO₂ emissions.
Xlinks First has attracted development funding from investors including Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA), Octopus Energy, TotalEnergies, Africa Finance Corporation and GE Vernova, and works with financial advisers J.P. Morgan and Société Générale on construction financing. The company emphasises socio‑economic benefits in Morocco through thousands of jobs, local industrial supply chains and community social plans, and operates under a business code of conduct that commits to exceeding environmental compliance and supporting local development. In June 2025, after the UK government chose not to progress a Contract for Difference for the project, Xlinks First began exploring alternative routes to market while maintaining its focus on delivering the Morocco–UK link and related long‑distance clean energy infrastructure.
