About
Transelectrica (C.N.T.E.E. Transelectrica SA) is Romania’s transmission and system operator responsible for managing, operating and developing the national high‑voltage electricity transmission grid and the Romanian Power System. Established in 2000 through the unbundling of the former state electricity authority CONEL into separate entities for transmission, distribution and generation, it provides electricity transmission services and real‑time system dispatch to ensure secure, stable operation of the grid and the balance between generation and consumption. The company is headquartered in Bucharest and is organised in eight territorial transmission branches, each operating regional sections of the network comprising several hundred to over 1,500 kilometres of power lines, plus a dedicated metering branch for wholesale market settlement.
Transelectrica operates, maintains and plans the transmission network and coordinates interconnections and electricity exchanges with neighbouring and wider central and eastern European countries as a member of ENTSO‑E. It administers a suite of electricity markets, including capacity allocation for interconnections, ancillary services, the balancing market, day‑ahead and intraday markets, centralized bilateral contract markets and the green certificates market, and it provides non‑discriminatory access to the high‑voltage grid for generators and large consumers. Through wholly owned subsidiaries it delivers transmission grid maintenance (SMART), power market operation (OPCOM), training services for energy personnel (FORMENERG), telecom and IT services for network operation (TELETRANS), and engineering services for power plants and substations (ICEMENERG and ICEMENERG SERVICE). Transelectrica is listed on the Bucharest Stock Exchange under the symbol TEL, remains majority state‑owned, and has gradually expanded its licensed activities to include electricity generation for its own consumption. It reports several thousand employees and publishes detailed financial, non‑financial and sustainability reports for investors.
