TEPCO Power Grid, Incorporated is the transmission and distribution business company of the TEPCO Group and a wholly owned subsidiary of Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, Incorporated. Established on April 1, 2015 and headquartered in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, it has share capital of 80 billion yen. The company’s major business operations comprise general power transmission and distribution, real estate rental, and power generation on remote islands, positioning it as the grid operator within the group’s vertically separated structure.
TEPCO Power Grid is responsible for nearly one-third of all the power supplied in Japan and provides electricity to the Tokyo Metropolitan Area, which accounts for around one-third of the country’s total power consumption. The company emphasizes stable, high-quality power supply, citing world-class reliability indicators including an average of 0.06 power outages per household per year and an average outage duration of six minutes per household in fiscal 2015, supported by highly reliable equipment, facilities and advanced technology. As part of its network modernization, TEPCO Power Grid planned to install a total of 29 million smart meters in its service area by fiscal 2020, enabling automated meter reading, home energy management systems and the “visualization” of electricity use, and contributing to diversified tariff structures, societal energy savings and reduced future capital investment in power supply.
Internationally, TEPCO Power Grid pursues global business expansion as a key growth strategy. In 2018 it agreed with Chubu Electric Power and ICMG to establish a joint venture in Singapore to invest in and operate electricity transmission and distribution and next-generation infrastructure projects, incubate new businesses, and provide global training programs aimed at developing personnel skilled in investment and new business development.
