TenneT is a leading European electricity transmission system operator that plans, builds, operates, and maintains over 25,000 kilometres of high‑voltage grid in the Netherlands and large parts of Germany. Operating as two national TSOs within one holding company, it oversees the 110–380 kV networks, balances real‑time supply and demand, and facilitates the European energy market via 17 cross‑border interconnectors serving more than 43 million end‑users. In the Netherlands it is the designated offshore grid operator and in both countries it develops and operates onshore and offshore infrastructure, including 19 offshore connections totalling 12.2 GW of capacity. TenneT also provides non‑regulated services such as managing infrastructure for broadcasting and telecom signals.
The company plays a central role in the energy transition and long‑term system planning. Its “Target Grid 2045” vision proposes DC superhighways and energy hubs across the North Sea, the Netherlands, and Germany to integrate rapidly rising solar, onshore and offshore wind capacity. It has standardised 700 MW AC offshore grid connections in the Dutch North Sea and is now rolling out a 2 GW HVDC programme, including at least 14 large offshore wind grid connection systems by around 2030 and projects such as BalWin5 (2.2 GW) and DolWin6 in the German North Sea. Grid investments are financed in part through a substantial green bond programme dedicated to offshore and onshore renewable transmission.
TenneT underpins these developments with digital and technology partnerships, including real‑time event‑streaming architectures for grid operations, optical networking to manage remote 2 GW platforms, and pilots in blockchain‑based flexibility and advanced grid technologies such as 525 kV HVDC, dynamic line rating and meshed offshore networks, all aimed at enabling a secure, affordable and low‑carbon electricity system.
