SP Energy Networks is the electricity network business of ScottishPower within the Iberdrola group. As a licensed distribution and transmission network operator, it owns, operates and develops the onshore electricity networks across Central and Southern Scotland and across Merseyside, Cheshire, North and Mid‑Wales and North Shropshire. Its regulated activities are delivered through SP Transmission plc, SP Distribution plc and SP Manweb plc. The company transmits, distributes and connects electricity to and from around 3.5 million homes and businesses, serving over 6 million customers via a network of more than 110,000 km of power cables, 40,000 km of overhead lines, 65,000 km of underground cables and about 30,000 substations. It is the point of contact for power cuts, new or upgraded connections and issues with network equipment.
SP Energy Networks plays a central role in the UK’s energy transition, acting as a key enabler of decarbonisation and integration of renewable generation. It has connected around 7 GW of renewable generation to its networks and is investing approximately £7 billion in network reinforcement, including major programmes such as a £5.4 billion grid upgrade focused on new overhead lines and substations, and more than £220 million of overhead line contract extensions under its ED2 business plan. It is delivering strategic transmission projects including subsea interconnectors such as Eastern Green Link 1 and 4 and an innovative STATCOM and synchronous condenser scheme with Hitachi Energy at Eccles to increase transfer capacity by up to 280 MW.
The company has committed to achieve Net Zero by 2035 for its own operations, reporting a 53% reduction in tCO2e emissions since 2013 and diverting 95.5% of direct waste from landfill. Its sustainability strategy focuses on carbon, circular economy, supply chain, biodiversity and environmental management, alongside plans to decarbonise its vehicle fleet by 2030 and support just transition and community energy initiatives across the regions it serves.
