ScottishPower is a vertically integrated energy company headquartered in Glasgow, Scotland and operates as a subholding within the Iberdrola Group. It focuses on electricity and gas supply, renewable energy generation and energy network management across the UK. Through ScottishPower Energy Retail Ltd it supplies electricity and gas to domestic and business customers and provides associated metering, billing, pricing and customer service. The group offers smart meters, heat pumps, solar panels and electric vehicle charging solutions, and positions itself as the first integrated energy company in the UK to generate 100% green electricity. In 2020 it reported revenue of £5.35 billion and employed about 5,500 people.
Operationally, ScottishPower is the transmission owner for central and southern Scotland and the distribution network operator for central and southern Scotland, Merseyside, North Wales and parts of Cheshire and Shropshire via SP Transmission, SP Distribution and SP Manweb. SP Energy Networks plans multi‑billion‑pound upgrades to transmission infrastructure in central and southern Scotland and has regulatory approval to invest up to £12 billion in the region’s electricity grid. ScottishPower Renewables, part of the ScottishPower group, leads development, construction and operation of onshore and offshore wind, solar and grid‑scale storage, with over 40 operational wind farms and more than 3,000 MW of capacity, including offshore projects such as West of Duddon Sands and East Anglia ONE and delivery of Iberdrola’s offshore wind farms in the Southern North Sea.
Strategically, ScottishPower is investing heavily in wind energy, smart grids and electrification, with plans to invest billions of pounds in UK network infrastructure, clean generation, storage and smart solutions between 2023 and 2025. It is committed to supporting the UK’s net‑zero transition by expanding renewable capacity, reinforcing networks to integrate low‑carbon technologies, enabling electric transport and clean heating, and developing green hydrogen solutions for hard‑to‑electrify sectors.
