REN – Redes Energéticas Nacionais, SGPS, S.A. is a Portuguese energy infrastructure company that holds the concessions for the National Electricity Transmission Grid (RNT) and the National Natural Gas Transportation Grid (RNTGN) in mainland Portugal. Founded in 1994 and headquartered in Lisbon, it is responsible for the planning, construction, operation, maintenance and global technical management of these very-high-voltage electricity and high‑pressure natural gas networks, ensuring the continuous balance between generation and consumption and the security and quality of energy supply.
Through REN – Rede Elétrica Nacional it operates the national electricity transmission network and dispatch centre, manages interconnections with the Spanish and wider European systems, and supports the integration of increasing shares of renewable generation, including solar and wind, in line with Portugal’s energy transition and electrification goals. Through REN Gasodutos, REN Atlântico and REN Armazenagem it manages the national gas transmission network, the Sines LNG regasification terminal, and underground natural gas storage, and provides associated transport, storage, maintenance and metrology services. The group also runs a telecommunications business (RENTELECOM), issues Guarantees of Origin for electricity in Portugal, and offers engineering, consulting, IT and back‑office services.
Internationally, REN transmits and transforms electricity in Chile via Transemel, participates in gas transmission through Electrogas in Chile, and holds a minority stake in Hidroeléctrica de Cahora Bassa in Mozambique. REN positions its investment plans and green bond financing towards grid reinforcement, interconnection capacity, renewable integration and emerging low‑carbon infrastructure such as hydrogen, and embeds sustainability and community and environmental criteria into its network development. In 2025 it employed around 800 people.
